Royal Highland Festival: A Colourful Celebration in the Bhutanese Himalayas

Imagine yourself surrounded by the lofty mountains of the Himalayas with vibrant costumes, music, and decorated animals around you. That is what the Royal Highland Festival is all about in Bhutan. Held in the remote village of Laya, it provides a great opportunity to experience the culture and lifestyle of the Bhutanese highland population. Laya is situated at about 4,000 metres above sea level in Gasa District. It creates a dramatic scene and makes the celebration even more memorable.

The festival is a meeting of local communities, travelers, and people from various highland communities of Bhutan. Traditional dances, animal competitions, local produce, and open-air activities help to create a festive mood. However, above all, this royal festival pays tribute to the heritage, traditions, and lifestyle of the inhabitants of the mountains of Bhutan.

If you want to experience a different side of Bhutan, this festival offers culture, nature, and adventure in one remarkable journey. In this blog, we will explore the festival’s traditions, cultural performances, highland activities, local food, Laya Run, and travel tips.

Royal Highland Festival

What Is the Royal Highland Festival

The Royal Highland Festival is an annual event that takes place in Laya, Gasa, and has been held since 2016. It revolves around the culture, traditions, and way of life of the highland regions of Bhutan.

The festival is also used as a platform by highland communities to showcase their goods, skills, and indigenous knowledge. It enables visitors to explore locally grown food, craftsmanship, textiles, agricultural products, and medicinal plants. This festival is conducted annually between 23 and 24 October. The upcoming festival will similarly take place from 23 to 24 October 2026.

Laya: The Beautiful Home of the Festival

Laya is not an ordinary festival destination. Reaching this village seems to be a part of the adventure. Located in the high mountains of Gasa, Laya is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery. The journey includes a drive towards the road-end point followed by a hike into the highland village. Moreover, visitors can also arrange helicopter access to participate in the festival; however, booking may be granted subject to availability.

The remote location gives this royal festival a special character. Instead of crowded urban streets, visitors experience mountain trails, alpine landscapes and traditional homes. The journey also allows travellers to appreciate the connection between the people of Laya and their natural surroundings.

A Celebration of Highland Culture

The heart of this Royal Highland Festival in Bhutan is its culture. The event gives visitors an opportunity to see traditions that remain closely connected to everyday highland life.

Traditional Music and Performances

Layap community exhibits traditional music, dance, and cultural performance as part of the celebrations. Visitors can also witness Auley, a traditional epic poem and song recitation connected with the cultural heritage of Laya. They bring excitement and vibrancy to the festival. In addition, they ensure that the future generation remains connected to the traditional practices of their community.

Buelwa: A Traditional Offering

Another cultural aspect is Buelwa, which is the presentation of traditional gifts that are given on special occasions. It signifies respect and good luck. Witnessing cultural practices can give one insight into Bhutanese culture beyond the dzongs and the monasteries of Bhutan.

Highland Animals Take Centre Stage

Animal involvement is an integral part of the festivities, and these beings have quite a significant presence at the festivity itself. Among those that can be observed at this royal festival are:

  • Yaks
  • Horses
  • Mastiff dogs

Some animals are decorated with colorful textiles, bells, and many other kinds of traditional decorations. The mere appearance of these animals gives rise to one of the most impressive sights during the festival. This event underscores the role that livestock play in mountain societies. The yak is one of the important animals of this community that is especially linked to food, transportation, and traditional occupations.

Discover Local Food and Highland Products

Another aspect that adds to the experience of visiting this festival is food. The festival has stalls displaying local produce and highland delicacies. People might find products made of yak milk, locally grown agricultural produce, herbal medicine, and other local materials. Apart from the food stalls, there are textile and souvenir stalls as well, where people can learn more about the local craftsmanship.

Trying local cuisine can make the whole visit more significant, as this can mean not just sightseeing but rather understanding how the local communities make use of their surrounding environment.

Why the Festival Is More Than Entertainment

Royal Highland Festival Bhutan is more than just an entertaining event for tourists. It also emphasises the connection between culture, livelihoods, and the environment of the Himalayas.

Highland people have developed lifestyles that fit their environment well. The knowledge that these people have about animals, farming, plants, and landscapes is an integral part of Bhutanese cultural heritage.

This festival provides an opportunity to present these cultural aspects to other people. Local producers also have the opportunity to feature their products during the festival. Moreover, participation in this festival recently included biodiversity products and rural livelihood programs.

What Makes the Experience Special

Several elements combine to make the festival different from a typical cultural event.

The Himalayan Setting

The snow-clad peaks and high-altitude setting provide a stunning background to the festival. The location alone is enough to give visitors reason to travel there.

Living Traditions

It offers visitors the chance to observe living culture in terms of dress, music, food, traditions, and not just in the context of a museum.

Community Spirit

Highland communities from different parts of Bhutan come together to share their culture and products. This creates a strong sense of community throughout the celebration.

Adventure

It takes prior planning and effort to reach the town of Laya. The journey and high-altitude setting of this festivity make it particularly attractive for adventure seekers.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

Visiting Laya involves much more preparation compared to a normal tour of Bhutan. These are some important aspects you should remember:

  • Get ready to experience chilly conditions at higher altitudes.
  • Allow yourself enough time to reach and get out of Laya.
  • Get ready to walk at high altitude.
  • Bring good trekking shoes and warm clothes.
  • Follow the traditions of the locals while visiting any place.
  • Verify information on festival dates and transportation prior to going there.
  • Make arrangements for stay and transportation in advance.

Most importantly, respect the local community and its traditions. The festival is a cultural celebration first, so responsible and considerate travel helps protect its character.

End Notes

The Royal Highland Festival provides an excellent opportunity to explore the hidden side of Bhutan. From decorated yaks to traditional performances to the daunting Laya Run, every aspect of the festival captures the essence of the Himalayan Highlands. The faraway location of the event brings an element of adventure, while the hospitality of the locals adds to the cultural experience.

Our first time in Bhutan couldn’t have been as amazing & memorable as it was without the wonderful team behind Bhutan Best Inbound Tour who were with us every step of the way. We decided (very last minute) to go to Bhutan with only weeks to spare. I decided to go with Bhutan Best Inbound Tour based on online reviews, responsiveness (via WhatsApp), and reasonable pricing. Because our trip was short (5 days/4 nights) and we already rushed to book our flights/accommodations, we were mainly looking for a dedicated tour guide/driver to explore Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. Deki, who planned our itinerary, was responsive and accommodating to all my inquiries and requests. She answered my questions, and put my mind at ease when it came to our visas. She was lovely to work with, and made us feel prepared before our trip. But what she couldn’t have prepared us for was how amazing Bhutan would be and how much we would love our trip. We arrived at Paro International Airport early in the morning, and were greeted outside with white scarves by our guide and our driver who were patiently waiting for us. Our guide, Phub, was fantastic. Not only was he like a walking encyclopedia about his country, the culture, and Buddhism, he was personable and so funny. He was also quite the photographer, capturing the best angles and even directing us on how to pose. Phub was also very flexible with our daily schedule, and accommodating to our requests, which we appreciated immensely. He also shared tips & tricks that only locals would be privy to, which made this trip much more intimate and fulfilling than if we decided to go without a tour guide. I HIGHLY recommend a tour guide if you are thinking of going to Bhutan for the first time. We had two drivers, both very humble and excellent drivers. I felt very safe in the car despite impatient drivers, the occasional cow and dog, and landslides. On our day trip to Punakha from Thimphu, a landslide extended our trip by an hour each way, but our driver was patient and made sure we were comfortable. The breathtaking views (and company) made the delays worth it. We were so fortunate to have such wonderful drivers who prioritized our safety. From the kindness of the people to the delicious food, from the beautiful weather to the rich culture, and of course, Tiger’s Nest (which left us breathless, both figuratively and literally), Bhutan is truly a special country that left us with so many beautiful memories. We plan to visit Bhutan again, and when we do, we can’t wait to work with Bhutan Best Inbound Tour for all our needs. If you’re looking for a tour guide, I highly recommend reaching out to Bhutan Best Inbound Tour for a seamless experience

Everything about my experience in Bhutan was outstanding from start to finish! It is very serene, stunningly beautiful, and its people are exceptionally kind and welcoming! Of course, had I not chosen the right tour operator, I might have left with different feelings. Fortunately, I selected Bhutan Best Inbound Tour. From the start, my experience with them was smooth and seamless. Deki, my contact in arranging the logistics, could not have been more responsive and helpful. She made everything so easy, including arranging for a visa. And, I cannot say enough good things about my guide and driver. They really made my experience in Bhutan so wonderfully memorable. I felt completely comfortable and safe with the driver, Jigme. Not only that, he always had a smile on his face. My guide, Tenzin (“Tax”] Loday was great. He was prompt, reliable, and very engaging. He is now my Bhutanese brother! His love for his country shows, and his clear and helpful explanations about its history and sites could not have been better. Thank you Bhutan Inbound Tour!
