Royal Highland Festival: The Mountain Celebration That Brings Bhutan’s Highlands to Life

For travellers from Singapore seeking a holiday beyond familiar cityscapes and tropical beaches, Bhutan offers a different experience at the heart of the Himalayas. Famous for peaceful mountains, Buddhist sites and spectacular mountain views, this Himalayan Kingdom is all about living in harmony with nature. One of the best ways to witness Bhutan’s heritage is to visit the Royal Highland Festival, a lively event showcasing the traditions and communities of Bhutan’s high-altitude regions into focus.

Held in the remote highlands of Laya, the festival showcases the traditions of yak herders and mountain communities who uphold centuries-old practices in spite of the adverse conditions brought about by living at high altitude. Each part of the event, including folk performances, traditional costumes, local foods, and mountain skills presentations, brings something new to light about Bhutanese culture.

This blog explores the festival’s cultural significance, traditional activities, breathtaking highland landscapes, travel tips, and ways to combine the celebration with a wider Bhutan adventure.

Royal Highland Festival

Discover the Heritage of Bhutan’s Highland Communities

The Royal Highland Festival is a celebration of the unique culture, traditions, and resilience of the highland people in Bhutan. The main venue of this festival is Laya, which is located in the remote northwestern area of Bhutan with stunning mountainous landforms and alpine pastures surrounding it.

For generations, the communities in this region have depended upon yak herding, traditional agriculture, as well as their understanding of the mountains to sustain their livelihoods. The festival brings these traditions into the spotlight while creating opportunities for cultural exchange and community participation.

Visitors can gain insights into:

  • Highland livelihoods: Learn how yak herding and traditional practices support life in challenging mountain environments.
  • Cultural heritage: Observe traditional clothing, folk music, dances, and customs passed down through generations.
  • Community traditions: Discover how local communities maintain their identity while adapting to changing lifestyles.
  • Sustainable living: Understand the relationship between highland communities, their livestock and the fragile mountain environment.

For travellers from Singapore, who are accustomed to the hustle of city life, the festival presents a different view of life in which community connections, local culture, and environment play an important role in cultural identity.

Experience the Traditions That Bring the Festival to Life

The Royal Highland Festival in Bhutan serves as a gateway to understanding the living traditions of communities in Bhutan’s mountains. The festival sums up remarkable skills, creativity, and heritage that highland communities possess.

Traditional Dress, Music and Dance

One of the most memorable aspects of the festival is the opportunity to see highland residents dressed in their traditional clothing. Colourful garments, distinctive accessories and locally crafted items reflect the cultural identity of communities living in the mountains.

Traditional songs and dances add to the celebratory atmosphere. Through music, movement and storytelling, visitors can appreciate how local traditions continue to connect generations and preserve a strong sense of belonging.

Yak-Related Activities and Highland Skills

Yaks play an important role in the life of the people in Bhutan’s mountainous regions since they provide milk, meat, wool, and transport where typical farming methods do not work. During the festival, these animals are honored with various activities and demonstrations linked to yak herding and mountain livelihoods.

Such experiences enable tourists to gain valuable insights into the kind of skills needed to live in remote mountain communities. Additionally, the experiences provide visitors with an insight into the connection between human beings, animals, and nature.

Local Food and Traditional Products

Food is another avenue through which tourists can learn about the culture of Bhutan. Depending on the stalls and activities included in every edition, tourists can witness various regional dishes, dairy products, and locally made handicrafts.

Trying traditional food and exploring local products provide a more personal experience during the festival, especially for tourists who want to know more about the destination than its tourist spots.

What to Know Before Visiting Bhutan’s Highland Festival

A visit to the Royal Highland Festival requires more preparation than a conventional city break. This is because of its isolated setting, which adds to its charm but necessitates careful planning of transport, accommodation and fitness.

Getting to Laya

The majority of tourists coming from other countries usually start their travel in Paro, which is the only international airport in Bhutan. Then, after reaching Paro, they usually travel to the northwestern part of the country by road and then proceed to Laya, which may involve trekking depending on the chosen route and current arrangements.

The journey might take time; hence, do not plan your schedule too tightly around the festival. Consult an expert local tour operator to determine the correct route, road conditions, trekking needs, and availability of accommodations.

What to Pack

Prepare for changing climate and the practicalities of travel in the mountains. Some of the items that might be useful during your tour:

  • Warm clothing, such as a fleece jacket and insulated jacket.
  • Good shoes for trekking with grip.
  • Waterproof outerwear and extra socks.
  • Carry enough sun protection, such as sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • Personal medications and a water bottle that can be refilled.
  • A camera, spare batteries, and portable charging equipment.

Travellers from Singapore may find the cooler temperatures particularly noticeable, especially during the nights and early mornings.

Allow Time to Adjust to the Altitude

Laya sits at a high elevation, so altitude deserves serious consideration. Give yourself enough time to adjust while following your itinerary across the best Bhutan tours. Increase your activity level gradually and get in touch with a physician in case you have any questions.

Signs of altitude sickness include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and unexpected exhaustion. If you experience any of those symptoms, stop climbing and seek medical assistance. Never assume that good general fitness eliminates altitude-related risks.

Make the Festival Part of a Wider Bhutan Adventure

For visitors travelling from Singapore, the Royal Bhutan Highland cultural festival can become part of a more extensive travel schedule while visiting Bhutan’s cultural and natural attractions

Consider combining your highland experience with destinations such as:

  • Paro: Explore the historic valley and plan a visit to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery according to your time and fitness level.
  • Thimphu: Discover Bhutanese crafts, local markets, cultural institutions and the capital’s distinctive character.
  • Punakha: Visit Punakha Dzong and experience the scenic river valleys and surrounding countryside.

An extended route can provide an interesting contrast between the accessible cultural destinations of Bhutan and the distant localities in the highland regions of the country. It also provides flexibility in case of adverse weather in the mountains or difficult transport conditions.

The festival dates, programme, access arrangements, and accommodation availability can vary, so make sure to verify this information according to your planned year prior to making any bookings or plans for traveling. Visitors are also advised to verify the entry requirements and tourism costs of Bhutan from official sources.

Our first time in Bhutan couldn’t have been as amazing & memorable as it was without the wonderful team behind Bhutan Best Inbound Tour who were with us every step of the way. We decided (very last minute) to go to Bhutan with only weeks to spare. I decided to go with Bhutan Best Inbound Tour based on online reviews, responsiveness (via WhatsApp), and reasonable pricing. Because our trip was short (5 days/4 nights) and we already rushed to book our flights/accommodations, we were mainly looking for a dedicated tour guide/driver to explore Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. Deki, who planned our itinerary, was responsive and accommodating to all my inquiries and requests. She answered my questions, and put my mind at ease when it came to our visas. She was lovely to work with, and made us feel prepared before our trip. But what she couldn’t have prepared us for was how amazing Bhutan would be and how much we would love our trip. We arrived at Paro International Airport early in the morning, and were greeted outside with white scarves by our guide and our driver who were patiently waiting for us. Our guide, Phub, was fantastic. Not only was he like a walking encyclopedia about his country, the culture, and Buddhism, he was personable and so funny. He was also quite the photographer, capturing the best angles and even directing us on how to pose. Phub was also very flexible with our daily schedule, and accommodating to our requests, which we appreciated immensely. He also shared tips & tricks that only locals would be privy to, which made this trip much more intimate and fulfilling than if we decided to go without a tour guide. I HIGHLY recommend a tour guide if you are thinking of going to Bhutan for the first time. We had two drivers, both very humble and excellent drivers. I felt very safe in the car despite impatient drivers, the occasional cow and dog, and landslides. On our day trip to Punakha from Thimphu, a landslide extended our trip by an hour each way, but our driver was patient and made sure we were comfortable. The breathtaking views (and company) made the delays worth it. We were so fortunate to have such wonderful drivers who prioritized our safety. From the kindness of the people to the delicious food, from the beautiful weather to the rich culture, and of course, Tiger’s Nest (which left us breathless, both figuratively and literally), Bhutan is truly a special country that left us with so many beautiful memories. We plan to visit Bhutan again, and when we do, we can’t wait to work with Bhutan Best Inbound Tour for all our needs. If you’re looking for a tour guide, I highly recommend reaching out to Bhutan Best Inbound Tour for a seamless experience

Of course, had I not chosen the right tour operator, I might have left with different feelings. Fortunately, I selected Bhutan Best Inbound Tour. From the start, my experience with them was smooth and seamless. Deki, my contact in arranging the logistics, could not have been more responsive and helpful. She made everything so easy, including arranging for a visa. And, I cannot say enough good things about my guide and driver. They really made my experience in Bhutan so wonderfully memorable. I felt completely comfortable and safe with the driver, Jigme. Not only that, he always had a smile on his face. My guide, Tenzin (“Tax”] Loday was great. He was prompt, reliable, and very engaging. He is now my Bhutanese brother! His love for his country shows, and his clear and helpful explanations about its history and sites could not have been better. Thank you Bhutan Inbound Tour!
