Jakar Dzong can loosely be translated as “White Bird Fortress”. It was initially built as a monastery in 1549 and like any other administrative Dzong; it is used for civil and monastic administration.
An interesting feature of the Dzong which can still be seen to these days is the “Chhu Dzong” a sheltered passage leading to the water source within the parallel walls of the fortress in case of war during ancient times.
